Brake Fluid

Reservoir

The fluid reservoir is in the dash under the dash cover panel. The panel can be lifted to fill the reservoir. To do this, grip in the recess at the back of the cover. When installing, insert the lower front edge first.

Checking fluid level

The correct fluid level is essential to the satisfactory operation of the brake system. The fluid level must always be between the "max" and "min" marks.

The level of fluid tends to sink slightly when the vehicle is used due to the automatic adjustment of brake lining wear. This is quite normal.

However, if the level sinks noticeably in a short time or drops below the "min" mark, the system may be leaking. The failure of a brake circuit is shown by lighting up of the brake warning lamp. In both occasions you should visit a workshop to check your brake system.

Brake fluid

Brake fluid absorbs moisture. As too high a water content becomes detrimental to the entire system after a period of time, the brake fluid must be renewed every two years. The brake system must be bled afterwards.

VW switched from DOT 3 specifications to DOT 4 in 1984. The two are compatible and may be mixed, but use only DOT 4 for all changes and fill-ups. DO NOT MIX DOT 4 AND DOT 5 !!! DOT 5 is a silicone based fluid and has several very different characteristics beyond the scope of this Tip that make it unwise to mix the two.

Brake servo

The servo is operated by vacuum which is only available when engine is running. For this reason the vehicle should not be allowed to roll with engine not running. When the brake servo is not working, the pedal must be pressed harder.

Lubricants - Oil for engine, gearbox and power steering

Engine
You can use single grade or multigrade oil for both petrol and diesel engines, but multigrade is recommended. The container must be marked according to the API System with "SE" or "SF" for petrol engines or with "CC" or "CD" for diesel engines. The best choice is to use VW standard 500 00, with SAE 10W-30 or SAE 10W-40 for hotter regions.
Gearbox
  • Manual
The standard is SAE 80 or SAE 80W-90 with API "GL4" or Mil L 2105
  • Automatic
    SAE 90 with API "GL5" or Mil L 2105 B

Power steering
Use ATF Dexron
